I've had about 4 different laptops and so 4 different laptop bags in the last 6 years and found that a good laptop bag needs to have this: * Good protection for the laptop * Good utilization of space - everything should be easy to reach, not like a duffel bag where you can stuff everything * Enough space to carry a laptop, mouse, power brick, note pads, documents, PDA, cell phone, umbrella and other basic accessories * Easy to hang on the shoulder and by hand. * Good looks After all these points, I was in a big dilemma if I should go for a rolling laptop bag or a 'typical' laptop bag. Finally decided against a rolling bag as I felt that it would be too bulky, difficult to lift and carry in times where it is necessary (like when it rains, over stair cases) + it might be difficult to carry it along with another carry-on luggage in international flights. If you are ok with all of these, there is a nice rolling luggage by Wegner (Swiss army) which I had shortlisted - do take a look at that (PATRIOT from Wenger Triple Gusset Rolling Case w/ Removable Tote). Having decided to go with a 'typical' laptop case - I totally ruled out Samsonites and others after looking at them - they just provide you space to stuff things, nothing else. This bag - the Kensing contour is very unique, it has all the points which I was looking for + these: * Front small pocket: The best thing I like is the front pockets where I can keep a power brick and a optical mouse - all these are something which I would need immediate when I put my laptop down + I can keep an umbrella in the same pocket which I can take out if it starts raining. * Front large pocket: not critical accessories/utilities which we require only after setting up the laptop - I usually keep a cable lock, ear phones, spare spectacles, glue stick, white board markets, pen drive, postage stamps etc - all these in easy to reach compartments, without having to stuff them. * Rear pocket - this is the pocket which is on the 'countoured' side of the bag, hugs you when you put the bag on your shoulders. There is enough space - but I usually stuff very few things - like a mini external hard drive, network cable and a portal wireless router. * Heart of the bag - The laptop compartment is well padded to protect your equipment and it is made to fit 15" laptop. Next to the laptop comparment are two compartments for documents - where I keep my documents and notepads. Here is the best part - I tried keeping my 17" scanner into the document compartment and it easily fits into it - even though I do not intend to carry it like that - it would help me in case if I have to. * Easy to reach document compartment - Just love this compartment: When you put your bags on your shoulder and walk towards the airline security, you do not want to rummage through your bag/wallet and look for the travel documents - just keep them in this easy to reach compartment, it does have a zipper. - This is not just for air tickets, but I use it mostly for keeping my company/client ID badges and a short pack of my business cards * Where Kensington loses a star is in the styling - it looks like a really decent bag, very good indeed. But I would have like it if Kensington has styled it even better. Swiss army/wenger bags are the best in styling).I have used an earlier version of the Kensington backpack for years now to carry my laptop computer and books and have been very pleased. Some of the features of the older model that I were its comfort even with heavy loads, the durability, the organizational pockets and the ease with which the laptop could be removed from the bag. However, the zippers on my old backpack are no longer closing properly and so I decided to order this newer Kensington 62238 model as a replacement. Although the newer model has the same basic form as the older version, there have been some significant changes. The good features of the new model are the material which 1680 Denier Ballistic Nylon which is good for protection from wear and tear. The backpack is stiff and therefore it keeps its shape when you put it down which makes it easy to load and unload. The snugfit sleeve holds the laptop above the bottom of the bag so that there is space to act as a cushion for the laptop in case the bag is dropped. However, there are also some serious negative points about the new design. Let me start by saying that the photo included with the Amazon description did not match the backpack that I received. The most noticeable difference was the plain, metal zippers on the backpack that I received instead of the zippers shown in the photo which are coated with black plastic. I contacted Kensington and after a week they finally replied to my inquiry about the zipper. Kensington told me that the zippers should have the black plastic coating. The photo on the Kensington website also shows the zippers coated in black plastic, so I do not believe that the photo on the Amazon website was an error. It made me wonder just what backpack I received if it was different than what is advertised. The plain, metal zippers on the backpack I received look and feel cheap and are difficult to grasp in the cold or if you are wearing gloves. The zippers were not YKK and I would have reservations about the quality and longevity of the zippers.Another noticeable feature about the Kensington backpack that I received was the lumbar support. I have uploaded a photo so that you can see the yellow, adjustable metal bar on the back of the backpack. The Kensington literature claims that the idea behind the lumbar support is to shift weight to the hips. However, I did not find this to be the case. I loaded the backpack with a laptop and books and found that the lumbar support caused the brunt of the weight from the backpack to be focused against my lower back rather than my hips. This felt fine at first, but then rapidly became uncomfortable the longer that I wore the backpack. Backpacks intended for hiking or travel have hip belts that go around the hips for the purpose of transferring the load from the shoulders to the hips. The Kensington backpack does not have a hip belt and the lumbar support of the Kensington backpack simply can not accomplish the same task, despite the claims by Kensington. One of the features that is missing from the new design is the integrated handle at the top of the backpack. This has been replaced by a small loop of material that is neither convenient nor comfortable. The original handle was great for picking up the heavy backpack or for carrying it if you did not want it on your back. I don't know why Kensington did not include the handle on the pack, but its omission was the main reason why I decided to return the pack.I am not sure if the backpack that I received was a bad item due to the incorrect zippers. The older backpack model had so much going for it and I am sad to say that the redesign by Kensignton has significantly degraded the appeal of the backpack. I was very displeased with the zippers, the lumbar support and the lack of a handle on the new backpack design. I would not recommend the Kensington 62238 backpack or at least the version of the backpack that I received. Ich bin jedenfalls sehr zufrieden.4 months ago I ordered this laptop bag to replace same Kensington bag that served me well for almost 8 years prior to buying this one. The older bag was pretty well identical albeit a bit smaller which was fine as my laptop is now smaller. I like the functionality that the bag offers, multiple compartments and it has a business look and feel which I like. However, although the bag looks the sames as it's predecessor, it is not as rugged and durable. The stitching as come apart on the seam at the top - see my picture and I can't see a good way to fix it. I am out of the return window so I now have a bag which I will now have to replace. Save your money and get something else. This is a excellent quality backpack to carry your laptop . It is designed so that even if you drop your backpack your laptop will be fine. This is because of the padding and the pouch that your laptop sits in is suspended and does not touch the bottom of the backpack. The adjustable straps and lumbar area allow you to fit the backpack so that it feels like it was custom made just for you. The quality of the material is outstanding and they last a long time. This is the second one I have purchased and the first one lasted 3 years of daily use. Well worth the money. You will be very happy with this purchase.I own the backpack that is pictured on the product page and I love it but after 6-7 years it is starting to wear. I ordered this as a replacement but the item I received differed from what I was expecting in appearance, apparent quality and size.Appearance: The backpack I received was not the same black/dark grey combination I was expecting, but almost entirely black. Where I expected yellow piping creating a stripe of sorts down the back, the item I received was black. The zipper pulls on my original backpack are the same black with metal tips shown in the image but the ones on the item I received were flat black.Quality: While largely the same, the backpack I received seemed to be of a slightly lesser quality than my original. As noted above, the zipper pulls on my original backpack are quite sturdy and match those seen in the product's picture but the pulls on the item I received were different and seemed a little flimsier. The inside pockets (not visible in any of the product photos on Amazon's page) in my original backpack are mostly material with a mesh stripe down the middle to give a little visibility into what is inside; the inside pockets on the item I received were almost entirely mesh and appeared as if they would wear through much faster than those on my original.Size: I have an old, large (17.1") laptop. This laptop fits perfectly in my original backpack but is just a little too big for the replacement I received. I would not have been able to close the unit I received with my laptop inside.I am reasonably sure that the backpack was shipped to me is a fine item and the negative slant of my review is based solely on the comparison to my existing backpack. I suspect purchasers can expect it to last ~5 years of reasonable use.I don't know whether there was a shipping error or if Kensington has simply changed this backpack model but, unfortunately, the size was a deal-breaker for me and I was forced to return mine.I was very impressed with the bag when I first got it. The padding is amazing and the back support is a nice touch... It lasted me one full semester before the bottom began to tear open and I really wasn't carrying that much weight. Now I'm sure it would have lasted at least twice as long had I worn the bag with both straps most of the time instead of carrying it over one shoulder but still I would expect a bag to be able to handle that kind of use. Definitely not the greatest school bag in the world.
